It came quite fast, but it’s already that time of year!
Come kick-off the Christmas celebrations with the whole family this Friday for the official tree lighting ceremony. This event will start with a pop-up market along George St., and Santa will also be making a visit from the North Pole.
The official ceremony will run from 7pm until 9pm in Towne Square in front of the clock and the tree will be lit at 8pm.
But it doesn’t just end there, the Santa Claus parade will be happening the next day starting at 9am, regardless of snow or rain.
This year’s theme for the parade is “A Canadian Christmas Throughout the Decades” in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary, with five different decades being represented.
There will be 49 floats in addition to a variety of professional and school bands, however these floats are not professionally made. Various community groups, schools, both big and small companies build the floats you see at the parade.
The event also brings the community together and helps people in need. Oakville firefighters will be collecting toys for their annual Toy Drive. The Kinsmen will be collecting loose change, while the Salvation Army will be collecting donations of food and toys. And, the Friends of Falgarwood will be selling Red Noses once again for charity, with all proceeds going to the Wellspring Children’s Program.
Because of the parade some roads will be closed so take advantage of the Free Santa Shuttle. The service will operate every five minutes between the Oakville GO Station and downtown Oakville, starting at 8 a.m. until 11:15 a.m.
The last shuttle bus to return to the Oakville GO Station will leave downtown Oakville (Church Street and Dunn Street) at 11:30 a.m.
Oakville Transit will also provide service to the parade. All regular fares apply. For information, visit www.oakvilletransit.ca or call 905-815-2020.
